The philosophy of Gilles Deleuze could perhaps best be described by a concept he often allows to designate the structure of his own work, as well as the colloborative texts written with Félix Guattari: it is a rhizome, a non-hierarchical structure of concepts, branching out in all directions and inviting a multiplicity of uses, appropriations and graftings. In recent years, Deleuze's work has been attracting wide-spread attention, and its influences extend far beyond the borders of traditional philosophy borders which were never acknowledged by Deleuze himself in the first place. Scholars in film theory, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, architecture, literature, the visual arts and political theory have approached his philosophical heritage from different angles, which also means to answer a challenge emanating from the texts themselves, since they profoundly question traditional distinctions between theory and practice, concept and sensibility, the abstract and the concrete. The symposium will address the implications of Deleuze's work for current aesthetic theory and artistic practice which in fact always means blurring the distinction between them, and allowing the border(s) to be resituated and reconceptualized. The symposium will be held January 31-February 1, 1998, in the exhibition spaces of the Art Node Foundation, located on the island of Skeppsholmen, Stockholm (close to the new Museum of Modern Art). At present, the speakers include Jacques Rancière, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Manuel Delanda, John Rajchman, Greg Lynn, Anne Querrien, and Raymond Bellour. A few names will be added to this list, since we are still waiting for some final confirmations. The lectures and discussions will be held in English. The conference is organized by the art journal Material, together with the Art Node Foundation (www.artnode.se), and the philosopher John Rajchman, New York. Material has been published since 1991, and has been devoted to essays, interviews and criticism in the field of the visual arts, but will from the upcoming issue expand to include essays on philosophy, critical theory and other related issues. Art Node is a foundation supporting artistic work in the fields of new media and digital technology, and has organized a series of talks and seminars, as well as exhibitions with Swedish and international artists.
