Copenhagen, 26th of Feb 1998 The Adventures of Art; Solo-exhibition with Martin Bigum During the 90's the Danish artist Martin Bigum (b. 1963) has in his paintings described the adventures of the little figure Art. A humorous and a morbid figure at one and the same time, Art functions as a jester that can speak up - and startel people as they recognise canonical objects of art placed in Bigum's setting that bears more likeness to comic strips than to the art of painting. Dressed in a monk's habit and armed with a huge scythe, Art thus plays a leading role in Bigum's satirical comments on the conventional modes and institutions of art, which usually govern the spectators' opinions on the subject: art. With this solo-exhibition Martin Bigum has firmly placed himself on the contemporary Danish art scene, and one can only look forward to his next move. Be it with or without Art. Besides paintings, the exhibition shows Bigum's video Millineum and a few of his photographies. The Adventure of Art, Portalen in Greve (near Copenhagen), 17. January - 22. March. Martin Bigum is exhibited at the Stockholm Artfair in March. The Danish gallery: Galleri Nils Stærk, will show paintings from the exhibition The Adventures of Art, as well as Bigum's video 'Runner Millennium'. Ulla Rønberg, art critic, Copenhagen |
